Baking 101: how do I alter a basic sugar cookie mix to make it “chocolate”?
Question by *s*t*a*r* *d*u*s*t*: Baking 101: how do I alter a basic sugar cookie mix to make it “chocolate”?
I have very little time to bake cookies for Christmas so I bought basic sugar cookie mix to play around with. Can I simply add cocoa powder to make it chocolate? How much? It’s a Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie mix in a pouch that makes about 2 1/2 dozen cookies.

You can add cocoa powder. I’d add about 3 tablespoons and then taste the batter to make sure it’s still sweet and tastes chocolately. You can add more sugar or cocoa as needed. You might need to add a bit of water or milk to the mix to loosen it up.
What do you think? Answer below!
Adding just cocoa powder will reduce the sweetness of your cookies and require that you add a small amount of additional liquid. I would recommend that you melt chocolate and stir into the dough instead.
Sift a 1/4 cup coco powder into you dry ingrediants for good distrabution
Add 2 cups of cocoa to the dry mixture BEFORE you add liquids. I cocoa made mixture too dry, just add a BIT more liquid until mixture is good consistency..
Just add 2 Tbsp. Cocoa Powder to the dry mix, then follow the package instructions.
If the dough looks too dry, or won’t roll out right, add a tsp. of Hershey’s syrup (or milk) and mix well.
They should turn out a little chewy, and yummy!
I WOULD ADD ABOUT 2 TABLESPOONS THEN TASTE IF MORE NEEDED YOU CAN ADD MORE
Using cocoa powder will make the cookie dry. If you use melted choclate chips and add it to the mixed dough, you will also be increasing the sugar.
Use unsweetened baking chocolate, about 2 ounces, and add it to the mix or bake the cookies as is and drizzle the melted chocolate chips on top.
Do not think it is a good idea to fool around with a recipe if it is being used for anything special. Why not return it and get what you want.
add a little bit of coccoa powder you can’t go wrong with that!
if you wan’t it sweeter you can always melt some chocolate it is always yummy.
Phoebs and William are both correct. when you are adding coco powder you also need to be thinking about what taste you are going for. weather it is a milk chocolate taste or a dark chocolate taste. I prefer my chocolate more on the bitter side so when i make my sugar cakes and i want chocolate ones i just add a few Tab black cocoa and a touch more milk
also you may just want to just melt some chocolate and dip the finished cookies half way then lay them on parchment (wax paper will work ok) to cool. this will serve two purposes.
1) it will give the chocolate flavor you want
2) it will dress them up a bit
cocoa powder or melted chocolate
